guernsey law firm
Appleby’s Guernsey office was established in 2010. The Guernsey law firm, led by Managing Partner Richard Sheldon, focuses on the three core areas of Corporate, Dispute Resolution and Private Client & Trusts.
We provide first class legal advice in Guernsey. Our clients include public and private companies, investment funds, global financial institutions, trust companies, insurance businesses, high net worth individuals and fintech entrepreneurs.
Appleby remains the only Guernsey offshore law firm with a presence in all three of the Crown Dependencies which continues to be our unique selling point when quoting for, and winning, work. Our clients appreciate the value in having a single point of contact across the islands; reducing inconsistencies in advice given, controlling costs, and providing a seamless, consistent pan-jurisdictional service.
We are a member of Guernsey Finance, a joint industry and government initiative established to promote Guernsey’s financial services sector internationally.
guernsey lawyers
All our Guernsey advocates and senior Guernsey lawyers joined us from leading international law firms and have many years’ experience relating to both Guernsey law and an in-depth understanding of cross-jurisdictional issues.
The Corporate practice handles a wide range of transactional debt work and regulatory advice to international lenders and major UK financial institutions, with a particular expertise in subscription finance. We have the leading lender-side practice on the island in funds finance, working on ever‐more sophisticated products for Guernsey‐based funds, including NAV facilities, GP facilities and co‐investor facilities. We have also established a reputation as experts for reorganisations of large UK financial institutions.
Our Dispute Resolution team work across a broad spectrum of contentious matters, and has consolidated its position as a go‐to adviser on the most complex and high‐profile matters proceeding to trial on the island, with a particularly strong reputation for its work across financial crime cases, contentious insolvency, regulatory enforcement, trusts litigation, data protection and high value commercial disputes.
Our team of Guernsey solicitors are regularly instructed by onshore law firms in England and the US, global banks, and a number of prominent fiduciary and fund services providers.
We are ranked in all three principal legal directories – Chambers and Partners, Legal 500 and IFLR, and have earned an international reputation as one of the top tier Guernsey law firms with many of our Guernsey lawyers and Guernsey advocates listed as leading individuals in their practice areas.
why guernsey
Guernsey is one of the world’s premier offshore financial centres. Its constitutional status as a self-governing crown dependency gives it full fiscal and regulatory independence. Guernsey is a stable, well-regulated jurisdiction yet its government is flexible and responsive enough to be able to evolve to meet the changing requirements of the offshore world.
Guernsey has attracted a range of financial services businesses focusing on banking, investment funds, fiduciary services, insurance and asset management. In April 2009, the OECD placed Guernsey on its “White List” of approved jurisdictions, stating that it adhered to the internationally agreed principles of transparency and co-operation for the exchange of tax related information. Guernsey has signed numerous tax information exchange agreements (TIEAs) and will continue to do so with a view to reinforcing its commitment to international cooperation and recognition.

Projects
Appleby Guernsey community projects
At the heart of our corporate responsibility strategy in Guernsey is a series of programmes that support the environment, education and local charities.
Our aim through such programmes is to encourage community spirit and inclusivity across all age groups and sectors, and ones that embody values like discipline, good sportsmanship and teamwork.
Some of the organisations we are involved with and support through funding and in-kind donations include:
Supporting the provision of educational services for Guernsey schools and youth groups on Lihou Island plus protecting the island as an important nature and conservation area.
Sponsors and providing pro bono services for the establishment of a new homelessness charity in Guernsey.
Providing general commercial pro bono advice and training to the board. The charity has restored a Victorian walled kitchen garden at Saumerez Park. Its volunteers maintain the gardens, and aim to educate people of all ages not only in horticulture but also the history and heritage of Guernsey and the physical and mental benefits of gardening.
Sponsoring the annual 30 Walks in 30 Days fundraising event.
Supporting the development within Guernsey of marine activities with respect to schools and clubs.
Helping to raise awareness and funds to eliminate polio.
Sponsors of the Guernsey Junior Golf team and supporting golf development across the island.
Sponsors and supporters of one of the island’s great arts events.
Supporting local initiatives to help enhance community resources.
