Arielle, a Trainee in Appleby’s 2-year Bermuda legal trainee programme obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Drama and Theatre studies from the University of Kent in 2015. After receiving her BA she went on to complete both the Graduate Diploma in Law from BPP University in London Waterloo and the Legal Practice Course from BPP University in London Holborn.

Arielle started her pupillage with Appleby in September 2020. Her first 6-month seat was in the Corporate department as a member of the Funds and Investment Services team where she was mentored by Matthew Ebbs-Brewer, Partner and Head of Funds and Investment Services in Bermuda. Arielle assisted in the successful launch of three ILS funds during this seat. In connection with these launches she was responsible for a range of tasks, including but not limited to: drafting resolutions, drafting and submitting segregated accounts company applications to the Registrar of Companies, reviewing offering memorandums in line with the respective Investment Fund acts and rules, interfacing with clients via email on a regular basis, and completing and submitting fund registration applications to the Bermuda Monetary Authority.

Matthew Ebbs-Brewer said, “I have had the distinct privilege to act as Arielle’s mentor during her time with Appleby. As a mentor, the hope is always that pupils will take the fantastic individual qualities that led to their recruitment at the firm and apply them successfully to the practice of law. Arielle is a wonderful example of this and it has been an absolute pleasure to watch her flourish. Whilst today undoubtedly represents an important milestone, the culmination of a lot of hard work and long hours, it also represents what I am certain will be the beginning of the career of a future leading member of the Bermuda Bar.”

Her second seat under the mentorship of Partner Clive Langley was as a member of the Regulatory team, Fund Finance team and Funds and Investment Services team.  While in her second seat, Arielle took on more responsibility in relation to the closings on numerous fund financing matters. She assisted with the drafting of opinions, resolutions and Officer’s certificates; reviewed constitutional documents for both companies and partnerships; and liaised directly with clients on points of law.  As a member of the Regulatory team she also reviewed Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorist Financing policies and procedures in order to complete tests for compliance.

Clive Langley said, “It has been an absolute pleasure to have mentored Arielle during her training and to have gotten to know the amazing person that she is.  She has developed so much in a short period of time and I am really excited for her today on her call to the Bermuda Bar and know that she has a big future in the legal profession in Bermuda.  Arielle has become a dependable member of the corporate team.  She is very methodical, conscientious and results driven and that has translated to her being trusted by her senior colleagues and respected by some of our biggest clients.  I very much look forward to continuing to work with Arielle.”

Arielle has just recently started her third seat, and is enjoying increased responsibility on various fund financing and funds and investment services matters, in addition to her work as a part of the Banking and Asset Finance team.

Arielle said, “I am extremely honoured to be recognised as a member of the Bermuda Bar. I would like to express my gratitude to Appleby for providing me with this opportunity and for exposing me to the excellent work streams and colleagues that I have been fortunate enough to work alongside and learn from. I would specifically like to thank my mentors, Matthew Ebbs-Brewer, Sally Penrose and Clive Langley, for continuously challenging me to develop as a legal practitioner, to expand my knowledge base and to step out of my comfort zone. I have grown immensely under their tutelage and I cannot thank them enough for the constant support, guidance and encouragement that they have each provided.

I would also like to thank my son Noah, who has been by my side every day of my legal journey.  He has motivated me to be the very best version of myself, and to never give up on my dreams. Despite the numerous road blocks, family health concerns and loss that came about throughout my legal education; giving up was not an option, because there were always little eyes watching and learning how to deal with obstacles, how to persevere and how to achieve, and on the days when I couldn’t do it for myself, I did it for him. Finally, I would like to thank my parents, who have stood by me through it all these past 28 years, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your unwavering support, for affording me every opportunity within reach, and for all that you have done and continue to do for Noah and I.”
