Karim is currently in his second year of Appleby’s legal trainee programme. He obtained both a Graduate Diploma of Law and a Legal Practice Course certificate from The University of Law, Bristol.
Karim began his pupillage with Appleby in October 2021. His first seat was in the Corporate department where he was mentored by Andrew Kuzma, Counsel, practicing in the areas of capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, public offerings, private placements and corporate finance. Karim worked on a range of matters, including but not limited to: assisting with the cancellation of overseas permit companies, the restructuring of a group of companies, conducting due diligence exercises, the entry of a general partner into a sale and purchase agreement on behalf of the partnership, conducting company and partnership searches, drafting legal opinions, drafting board and shareholder resolutions, reviewing constitutional documents, amending security documents, reviewing foreign law governed documents, assisting with closings, and registering new charges against companies and charge satisfaction documents with the Registrar of Companies.
Andrew said: “I am delighted to have been able to act as one of Karim’s mentors during his corporate rotation. Karim’s positive attitude and glowing personality coupled with his professionalism and determination to learn have no doubt contributed to his success at Appleby. He works incredibly well under pressure and tight time constraints while still managing to maintain a calm, approachable and friendly disposition—which is a rare and valuable combination of attributes to possess in the legal practice. Karim is simply someone you want to have on your team. I look forward to watching him continue to develop and prosper at Appleby, and to continuing to work alongside Karim.”
Karim’s second seat was also in the Corporate department where he was mentored by Jerome Wilson, Partner and head of the Technology and Innovation team in Bermuda. Karim assisted with a range of matters, including but not limited to: assisting with successful Digital Asset Business Act license applications, drafting statutory declarations of merger for merging entities, assisting with the Intellectual property practice (new trade mark applications, trade mark renewal applications, registration of approved marks), reviewing Anti Money-Laundering Policies to ensure adherence to statutory regulation, preparing checklists outlining disclosure requirements under Digital Asset Code of Practice 2019, drafting board and shareholder resolutions, reviewing and amending company bye-laws, drafting letters of resignation for directors, and liaising with the Bermuda Regulatory Authority for discussions on regulated client activity.
Jerome said: “Karim is a wonderful and welcomed addition to our local fraternity of legal practitioners. I am delighted to have had a front row seat to his development as a professional over the years. On behalf of the partners and entire family of Appleby, I’d like to congratulate Karim on being called to the Bermuda Bar. This is but the beginning of his journey and I am glad that he has chosen to chart the path of his success with us.”
Karim commenced his third seat in the Dispute Resolution department in September 2022.
Karim said: “I will forever be grateful for my time with Appleby. Without their support and patronage, I would not have made it thus far in my legal journey. For the past ten years, my pursuit of self-actualisation has had a major focus on being called to the bar. And with this accomplishment, I will be able to not only absorb knowledge from a team of incredibly impressive legal minds, but also pay forward the support and patronage given to me, allowing me to make it this far.”
