It is the second year running that Garry has been shortlisted for these awards, having received a silver award for “IFC Lawyer of the year, partner” at the Citywealth Future Leaders Awards 2020.
Garry advises on a broad range of Isle of Man and BVI corporate transactions. He leads the firm’s funds & investment services team in the Isle of Man.
Since returning to the Isle of Man in 2017, Garry has led the Appleby team on a number of significant transactions, including SBTech’s $3.3 billion merger with DraftKings, STX Entertainment’s merger-of-equals with Eros International, Starwood’s £468 million take-private of RDI REIT, RL360’s £259 million acquisition of a 76% interest in Friends Provident International and the £256 million take-private of Manx Telecom. Before studying at Oxford University, where he obtained a first class law degree, Garry was educated in the Isle of Man, and he has returned to his secondary school on several occasions to speak to sixth form students on applying to universities. He is heavily involved in various local community projects, including the Appleby Academy, a 12-week programme that Appleby runs annually.
Olwyn Barry is a Partner in the Dispute Resolution department working in both the British Virgin Islands and the Jersey offices. Olwyn has a broad practice involving fraud and asset tracing, general commercial litigation, shareholders disputes, cross-border and domestic insolvency and enforcement work.
Prior to joining Appleby in 2015, she worked as an associate in A&L Goodbody, Dublin in the Commercial Litigation department specialising in contentious insolvency matters and advising on a broad range of commercial disputes, banking litigation and debt enforcement.
Olwyn graduated from the University College Dublin with a Bachelor of Civil Law (International) degree having spent a year studying in the University of Melbourne, Australia. She has been admitted to the roll of solicitors in Ireland and in England and Wales and was admitted as a solicitor of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court in 2015 upon joining Appleby´s BVI office.
Esmond’s practice focuses on advising international high-net worth individuals and families on their wealth planning needs and in assisting trustees and private banks on all aspects of trusts including creation, restructuring, administration and succession planning. He also specialises in Wills & Probate and advises on estate planning matters.
Esmond also has experience in advising on the creation of Cayman Islands Foundation Companies which were introduced into the jurisdiction in October 2017. To date he has advised clients on the incorporation of Foundation Companies as both succession planning vehicles and as issuing vehicles in initial coin offerings. Esmond spoke at the STEP Cayman Conference in 2019 on a panel discussion entitled: “Foundation Companies – a year on” and is due to speak at the Transcontinental Trusts Conference in Geneva on a panel session which will cover a discussion of a trustee’s decision making when faced with alternative investments including cryptocurrency, CRB and sustainable investments.
