Bio

Duncan Card is a partner in the Corporate department of Appleby’s Bermuda office. He has over 30 years of extensive international experience providing legal services to a broad range of complex commercial transactions in Canada, Bermuda and across the Caribbean.

His practice includes the following sectors: technology and innovation – including all IT contracts, fintech, insurtech, privacy and data protection, outsourcing transactions, telecommunications, infrastructure and project management, Casino and eGaming, and corporate governance, especially in cyber security and ESG.  Duncan is also a member of Appleby’s global Technology & Innovation practice.

Prior to joining Appleby in April 2022, Duncan was one of Canada’s leading commercial technology lawyers. He was a Partner at an internationally-recognised Canadian law firm for 17 years, during which he also opened and managed its Bermuda office from 2014-2018.

Duncan has several independent directorships,  and he has served as both an independent director of one of Bermuda’s largest banks for 12 years and as Bermuda’s sole representative on the Board of the Association of Caribbean Corporate Counsel for almost 10 years.

Duncan began his legal career in Bermuda as an Appleby Legal Education Scholarship recipient and trainee.

Recognition

Duncan holds numerous recognitions, awards and legal rankings over the years, including Chambers Global for IT and Chambers Canada as an ‘Expert Based Abroad’ (Bermuda) for IT. During his time practicing in Bermuda, he was awarded ‘Telecommunications, Media and Technology Lawyer of The Year 2018 – Bermuda’ by Finance Monthly Magazine Global Awards (UK) and winner of the ‘International Advisory Experts’ 2019 International Expert Award – IT Law Bermuda’.

Coverage & Insights

Duncan regularly lectures at universities on outsourcing, enterprise computing and data transactions, cloud services, and technology contract law.

He is the author of one of the leading books on information technology commercial and legal best practices, published in 2021 by Thomson Reuters International. He has written numerous other publications related to commercial transactions, including IP and IT contracting best practices, cyber security and corporate governance, offshore structures, transfer pricing and international (cross-border) matters.

Qualifications & Education

In 1984, he qualified for the Bermuda Bar and was admitted to the Law Society of Upper Canada.
