Bio

Michel Bougeard is a conveyancing manager in the Property department in Jersey, with over 40 years´ experience. He has represented both lenders and borrowers with regard to residential mortgages and associated financial issues, and has also acted in a wide range of property transactions for financial and professional institutions and property developers. Michel generally now specialises in residential property matters.

Michel joined Appleby in 1983. Prior to this he worked at the Autorisé de la Partie Publique (the predecessor of the Conveyancing Section of the current Law Officers Department) and at a Jersey-based international law firm.

He is a former Vice Chairperson of the Jersey Association of Property Conveyancers and, as a result, played an active part in the consultation process relating to the change-over of conveyancing documents into English. He also played a major part in discussions relating to the formation of a professional recognition among conveyancers of the standard that they have reached with a view to this ultimately being converted into formal qualifications in conveyancing.

Michel is fluent in French.

Recognition

Recent examples of matters include advising:

  • In relation to property issues relating to development sites, nursing homes, hotels, commercial and shop premises and farms
  • On property issues concerning manor houses, residential properties, flying freehold apartments, first-time-buyer properties and properties being purchased for occupation by essentially employed persons under Article 2 (1) (b) of the Control of Housing and Work (Jersey) Law 2012
  • In relation to property and company issues relating to share transfers  of residential properties, primarily apartments
Memberships & Associations

He is a member of the Jersey Land Registry User Group and has, on a number of occasions, been appointed by the Royal Court to act as an ´Expert´ on issues relating to property and land disputes.
